I love how casual Tammy Wynette’s desperation comes across in this song. How unrepentant her submissiveness and devotion. The sorrowful breeze of her voice wraps me in gingham and takes me to a place of family, cornbread, and of course, a whole lot of good lovin’.
Maybe it’s my dysfunctional upbringing, but there’s something sadly sweet about a woman’s undying assent. Some obsolete adage that harkens back to a time in which the only thing needed to save a family is a woman’s strength and dedication (and sexual prowess in bed).
You could take this as anti-feminist. You could take this as a woman deluded. I do not. I take it as a women who sees straight through to the bottom of things. A bottom, which at its heart, needs a lot of good loving. And isn’t there something so destructively romantic about anyone willing belt out, unabashedly: “If you never want to be without him, it means lovin’ everything about him, and that keeps your man around at night”.

A.A. Bondy: I’m on Fire (Bruce Springsteen)
This version is a lot closer to how I’ve always heard this song in my head.
Beautiful.
For another great Springsteen cover check out Beerjacket doing “Dancing in the Dark”. Also, Josh Ritter covering “The River” is real pretty and much better than the original. I think. Ok. Bye!
Looks like Mulder and me will not be Honeymooning here.
